An orangery or orangerie was a room or sometimes a separate building in the grounds of fashionable properties within the 17th to 19th centuries. A place where orange and other fruit trees were protected during the cold winters. Basically a large greenhouse or conservatory. The term orangery originated from the Renaissance gardens of Italy.
So what is the difference between an Orangery and Conservatory?
Conservatories are a seamless extension to a home providing that extra living space with the added benefit of viewing the garden. Originally as above orangeries were for growing citrus trees and tend to have a more robust construction from brickwork and large windows. Ultimately there is really little difference in terms of appearance.

If you are extending and the structure does not meet the criteria then you will need planning permission. Always ensure that if you do need planning that nothing is constructed until you have it as if you do not get planning you could be made to remove it.
The guidelines are as follows:
- Must not exceed or cover in excess of 50% of the size of the house
- Conservatories and Orangeries should not exceed 4 meters in height
- Can not include any Verandas, Balconies or Elevated Platforms
- No more than half the width of the house
